On the 9th August 1945 a Miles Martinet of No 776 squadron was carrying out a Radar exercise with H.M.S. Queen Charlotte when it spun into the sea 1 mile of Ainsdale beach killing both of the crew, the aircraft was being flown Chief Petty Officer E. J. W. Keefe and his crewman  Air Mechanic 2nd class A. W. B. Mills.

Chief Petty Officer Ernest James William Keefe age 20 was the son of Ernest Alfred and Gwendoline Blanche Keefe of Feltham, Middlesex and is remembered on Lee-on-Solent Memorial, Hampshire, Bay 6, Panel 1.
