On the 24th May 1945 Fairey Firefly No MB498 along with the other remaining Fireflies of No 1790 squadron were returning to R.N.A.S. Burscough after the tragic accident to Fairey Firefly No DK443 when Firefly MB498 suffered a engine failure whilst still over the sea. The pilot carried out a successful ditching and both crewmen abandoned the sinking aircraft and took to their dinghies. Two other Fireflies of the squadron circled the crash site until they were seen by a ship which was guided to the two airmen in the water and were quickly picked up.

The aircraft was flown by Lieutenant P.A. Tonybee R.N.V.R. and Lieutenant (A) E. M. Frazer R.N.V.R. as observer.
