Douglas C-47 43-48473 – 12/11/1944.

On the morning of the 12th November 1944 Douglas C-47 No 43-48473 of the 27th Air Transport Group and flown by 2nd Lieutenant William G. Gough along with three other crewmembers on a mail/freight flight from Le Bourget, Paris to Burtonwood.

When the aircraft was nearing Burtonwood a message was received that the airfield was fog bound and that they were to divert to RAF Valley, which they did however the aircraft did not arrive at its destination, an aerial search of the aircraft’s route proved unsuccessful in locating it.

The aircraft was found ten days later by a RAF Mountain Rescue team who were working in the area, the aircraft had flown into the cliffs above the Llyn Dulyn lake with the loss of all the crew, the tail of the aircraft was overhanging the cliffs and there was mail scattered all around the crash site.
